The “Butterfly cut” hairstyle was already trending in 2022, but that hasn’t stopped it from becoming one of the year’s most sought-after hairstyles – something that can be seen on TikTok, where the hashtag #ButterflyHaircut has over 670 million views.
What is Butterfly cut?
What defines the Butterfly cut is that it gives the illusion of a short cut hairstyle when the back hair is up:
“It’s a short haircut in a long hairstyle,” says hairdresser Luke Hersheson Vogue, “a style that allows you to put up the back hair to make it look like you have shorter hair. It’s called the ‘Butterfly cut’ because the idea is that the hairstyle allows for two completely different looks.”
The hairstyle can be compared to a grown-out curtain fringe and consists of two clear layers, where the shorter layer is roughly the same length as a page. This means that the hair, when it is put up in, for example, a ponytail, gives the impression of a consistently short hairstyle that frames the face nicely. When you then let the back hair down, you have a long hairstyle. The best of both worlds, quite simply!
Another clear advantage is that the hairstyle does not require excessive styling, as it suits wavy and curly hair well.
