Exports and tourist overnights increased in the North

Data from the third quarter of 2022 reveal the creation of 27,500 new jobs in the accommodation, catering and similar sectors.

CCDR-Norte published the bulletin on the regional economic situation Norte Conjuntura, for the third quarter of 2022, which presents the evolution of the economy, international trade and regional employment and unemployment.

In this edition of the bulletin, the 47.7% increase in the population employed in the accommodation, catering and similar sector in the 3rd quarter of 2022 in relation to the same period of 2021 stands out, which represented the net creation of 27,500 jobs .

In the same sense, overnight stays in tourist establishments in the North increased by 58.5% in the 3rd quarter of 2022 compared to the same period of 2021. When compared with the 3rd quarter of 2019 (the high season prior to the pandemic crisis) the upward trend continues up, with a growth of 13.4%.

Exports of goods from the North also registered a year-on-year increase, with an increase of 18.5% in the 3rd quarter of 2022, which compares with a growth of 28.0% in Portugal.

With regard to the unemployment rate in the North, there was an increase to 5.8% in the 3rd quarter of 2022, 0.3 percentage points (pp) more than in the previous quarter. Even so, compared to the same period of 2021, the unemployment rate in the North fell by 0.4 pp

Between the previous quarter and the 3rd quarter of 2022, the inflation rate in the North increased from 8.2% to 9.2%. Due to this increase, the purchasing power of salaried employees decreased by 5.2% in the North in the 3rd quarter of 2022. In Portugal, it decreased by 6.3%.

The employed population in the North decreased, year-on-year, by 0.6% in the 3rd quarter of 2022, reversing for the first time the growth trend that had been observed for 5 consecutive quarters. In the manufacturing industries of the North, the employed population fell by 2.6% in the 3rd quarter of 2022 compared to the same period of 2021.
