Easter is a holiday that does not have a fixed date, something that is due to a historical decision that was made almost 1700 years ago. We take a look at the history of Easter and when the holiday falls in 2023.
In theory, Easter can fall between March 22 and April 25. The fact that the holiday can fall on such widely different dates is due to the fact that Easter Sunday falls – tune in now – on the first Sunday after the first full moon after the vernal equinox.
This was already decided in the year 325 during a church council in Nicaea, the current city of Iznik in Turkey. The purpose was to ensure that the Christian Passover would not coincide with the Jewish Passover. This falls on the fourteenth day of the Jewish month of Nisan, which is ruled by the same full moon.
