On October 24, 2022, the Whatsapp application says goodbye to old iPhones with an operating system below iOS12. The devices most affected by this decision by Meta, the owner of the famous chat application, will be the iPhone 5s, 6 and 6S models, which will have to upgrade to iOS12 before this date.
As for the iPhone 5 and 5c (released in 2012 and 2013) these will even say goodbye to the application because they can only run up to version 11 of Apple’s operating system.
According to Meta, the reasons behind this change are the need to focus efforts on creating a best service for whatsapp and for that it is necessary to leave behind some devices and software so as not to waste resources.
The choice of what is no longer supported usually falls on older systems and on those with fewer users. In this case, leaving old iPhones behind means more willingness to bet on vital security updates for the most used and latest versions of Apple’s iOS.
Older iPhones: Updates Keep It Safe
The constant updates of operating systems on smartphones from Apple or other brands is usually associated with improvements in device performance and security. Apple itself had already abandoned support for these older iPhone models following its policy of guaranteeing at least five major updates, before ending support for a device of its brand.
On the Whatsapp website, the changes that are expected to take place at the end of October this year will not affect the following systems: Android with OS 4.1 or later; iPhone with iOS 12 operating system or later; KaiOS 2.5.0 or later, including JioPhone and JioPhone 2.
