Warner Bros has a 10-year plan for DC… and this is a terrible idea

There are many things that we can question in the last days of Warner. For example, his decision to merge two streaming platforms, canceling and laying off the staff of the most successful and popular one (business geniuses). But at least it’s nice to know that poor decisions are still part of the company’s brand.

Like having a 10 year plan for DC. A bad, terrible, awful idea.

DC rebooted… but not improved

In recent days the biggest topic of conversation has been the decision to cancel the Batgirl movie. Although the details of why it was canceled are not clear (and internal sources contradict the reason given by the study), Warner assures that the reason is to move away from the Sniderverse, the failed universe that began with Man of Steel and… well we don’t know if it has finished because at this point nobody wants to talk about the Sniderverse.

“We have done a reset. We have structured the business. There will be a team with a 10-year plan focused only on DC. It’s very similar to the structure that Alan Horne and Bob Iger put together very effectively with Kevin Feige at Disney. We believe we could build a much more sustainable long-term growth business outside of DC, and as part of that, we’re going to focus on quality. We’re not going to release any movies before they’re done… The focus will be, how do we make each of these movies, overall, the best it can be?”

Sounds good. Certain?

Except… Except it was the exact same thing they did with the Sniderverse!

The main problem was never quality

The problem with DC’s 10-year vision is that it misunderstands the problem of the movies. The fault was not necessarily the quality. We certainly would have preferred better movies, but even the MCU had its problems in the early days.

The failure of the DCU was in thinking that the connected universe is everything.

Before making a 10-year plan, before thinking about a franchise strategy, DC has to make good movies a priority. The Sniderverse’s problem wasn’t Batman VS Superman. It was that the studio then started making changes on the fly to try and ‘sell’ their universe. Don’t misunderstand me. Snyder’s Justice League is a bad movie. But Joss Wheadon’s version is worse because it shows the inconsistencies of executives looking to take over Marvel.

And it is a problem that persists to this day. Warner shouldn’t think about the next 10 years. He should think about how to get a great Superman movie out now. Not to focus on franchises, but to bring out the best in his individual characters. The best DC movies in recent years have been those that have thought outside the box.

It’s a shame DC executives are still stuck in one.
