Virtual reality could help reduce anesthesia in surgeries • ENTER.CO

The application of virtual reality has served in many fields in the health area, but now it could be quite useful in the administration of anesthesia in surgeries.

Scientists at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC), carried out a study in which they were able to verify how virtual reality can help them in the amount of anesthesia they provide to patients who require surgery for carpal tunnel syndrome. It is worth saying that the number of patients with this syndrome is increasing and this, to a large extent, is due to the continuous use of electronic devices.

The use of virtual reality in areas of medicine is not new, as its usefulness has previously been proven to treat conditions related to mental health such as anxiety, depression or even eating disorders. Now, in the field of surgery, the use of virtual reality could help control the anxiety of patients and also avoid giving more doses of a drug that could have consequences for the body.

Although anesthesiologists know very well how to calculate the amounts to administer to each patient, it is always an option to place the smallest amount possible. Specifically, the scientists obtained the participation of 34 adults who had to undergo hand surgeries between 2018 and 2019. They were divided into two groups, one that used virtual reality during surgery and one that did not. Each patient was able to choose the scenario that she wanted to visualize during the surgery, all scenarios aimed at relaxation.

They used noise isolating glasses and headphones in order to make the experience more immersive. Although in the results both groups stated that they felt more relaxed during the procedure, what is really important is that in the group that used virtual reality, the amount of anesthetics was lower. Of the group of 17 who used virtual reality, only 4 needed an additional dose of anesthesia, while in the other group all needed it.

Although this is a result with few people and larger-scale tests are needed, it does leave great optimism because in this way it is possible to reduce the amount of anesthesia that is required during surgery.
