Turkish exporter Volkan Demirel tearfully asks for help after the earthquake in Turkey: “People are dying”

The former Turkish international goalkeeper of Fenerbahce Volkan Demirel begged this Monday, between sobs, “help” to rescue those who remain under the rubble as a result of the 7.7 magnitude earthquake that shook Turkey and Syria this morning.

“I want you to send whatever resources you have,” Demirel says to the camera before breaking down in tears and imploring his supporters in a cracked voice.: “Please, please, for the love of God, people are dying here”, as could be seen in a live broadcast published on his Instagram account.

The former international goalkeeper for the Turkish national team is currently the coach of Hatayspor in the highest category of Turkish football. This is the main team from the city of Hatay, capital of the southern Mediterranean province of the same name and one of the cities hardest hit by the devastating earthquake.

Demirel, who is 41 years old and has more than 1.2 million followers on the social network, retired from active football in 2019, after adding close to 400 appearances with Fenerbahce Istanbul and more than sixty as the starting goalkeeper for the Turkish team.

A strong earthquake was registered in Turkey during the morning of this Monday with a magnitude of 7.7, according to the Richter scale. Reports indicate that Christian Atsu, who plays for Hatayspor, is among those missing from the severe earthquake that struck southeastern Turkey.

The quake has killed more than 1,000 people and is expected to be the strongest earthquake to hit the European country since 1939.

Atsu, Ghanaian midfielder who also belonged to Porto FC and Chelsea, who played for Málaga in 2016is being sought because he has not yet contacted the club’s leaders.

The provisional death toll from the earthquake in Syria and Turkey reaches almost 1,800 people, among the more than a thousand deathss that have been counted in Turkey and the 785 fatalities registered in neighboring Syria. Emergency services work against the clock to save those who are still buried under the rubble.
