Whenever we talk about snoring or snoring, we are referring to a noise that is emitted during sleep, by the upper airways. As we said, it is due to the vibration of the soft palate against the tongue during breathing.
Causes
This is a relatively common problem, affecting more than 50% of adults, mainly men, and with a tendency to get worse with age. And it is important to realize that there are factors that can potentiate the emergence of this situation, such as:
- airway anatomy;

- stuffy nose;
- deprivation or deficit of hours of sleep;
- sleeping position;
- some medication.

Diagnosis, treatment and prevention
As we have already mentioned, each case is different and snoring can be a sign of different diseases or health problems. Thus, those who habitually snore should consult an otorhinolaryngologist, so that a diagnosis and consequent treatment can be made.
The questionnaire, clinical observation and some tests are the basis for the doctor to understand the cause of snoring and the most appropriate therapy for each situation.

Treatment
Basically, the treatment of snoring can be medical or surgical.
O medical treatment can go through:
- Prescription of antihistamines and/or intranasal corticosteroids that help treat cases of respiratory allergy and chronic rhinosinusitis;
- Recommendation of dental appliances for mandibular advancement;
- CPAP (Continuous Positive Air Pressure), a nasal or nasal and buccal mask, which ensures convenient air inhalation whenever the patient has difficulty in doing so.
O surgical treatment can go through:
- Tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy;
- Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty, indicated in case of moderate or severe obstructive sleep apnea;
- Laser-assisted palatoplasty of the uvula (LAUP), indicated in a situation of mild obstructive sleep apnea;
- Somnoplasty, reduction of excessive tissue present in the palate, uvula and tongue;
- Genioglossal, hyoid or maxillomandibular advancement, surgery indicated in case of sleep apnea;
- Stimulation of the hypoglossal nerve, through a device that synchronizes the movement of the tongue with breathing;
- Septoplasty, decreased resistance to airflow through the nose.
Prevention
Although many situations of snoring require medical evaluation and treatment, there are some measures that we can all take to try to avoid this annoying problem that can ruin a good night’s rest. Therefore, those who snore should:
- Lose weight and eat a healthy, balanced diet;
- Avoid taking tranquilizers, tranquilizers or antihistamines;
- Avoid drinking alcohol or eating, about 4 hours before going to sleep;
- Seek to have a good sleep routine;
- Try to sleep on your side and not on your back;
- Tilt the head of the bed about 10 cm.
In summary, heavy and continuous snoring should ALWAYS be a reason to go to the doctor, regardless of your age or gender. Although this can be an easily solved problem, there are cases where it can be a sign of something more serious and complex.
Therefore, do not get used to sleepless or sleepless nights, due to your snoring or that of your partner. Consult a specialist and treat your health problem. Snoring is not inevitable and is treatable.
