In the midst of the restructuring carried out by the Mexican Football Federation (FMF) after the failure of the National Team in the Qatar 2022 World Cup, it was announced on Wednesday that Yon de Luisa did not continue as president of the institution after nearly five years in office.
In the statement, the FMF clarified that it was De Luisa’s own decision, without detailing points of disagreement regarding the upcoming decisions that will be made in Mexican soccer.
Although the information has been delivered well in advance, the position of president will be left by Yon de Luisa next May. Mexican media have published that in the directory of National Teams they already handle several names, but the main favorite is Joaquín Balcárcel, former legal vice president of Grupo Televisa.
In the same line are Santiago Baños (sports president of Club América), Héctor González Iñárritu (operational president of Club América), Mikel Arriola (president of Liga MX), José Fiestas (president of Atlas) and even the current director of National Teams Nationals, Rodrigo Ares de Parga, but w sports ensures that Barcácel is the favorite of managers.
it’s again Emilio Azcárraga Jean, owner of the Águilas del América, the one who promotes one of his trusted men in the Mexican National Teamon this occasion for the highest position of the Federation.
Although Azcárraga Jean could not put Miguel ‘Piojo’ Herrera on the El Tri bench, now he is pressing for one of his own to be chaired, Joaquín Balcárcel.
Who is Joaquín Barcácel, possible next president of the Mexican Football Federation?
A lawyer by profession, Joaquín Barcácel has years of experience in companies of recognized reputation in Mexico. In 2011, he was awarded Lawyer of the Year by the Mexican Association of Media and Entertainment Lawyers, due to his renowned work at Televisa.
De Televisa was legal vice president between 2006 and 2018, to later occupy the position of chief of staff of the executive president of the board of directors, in this case to be by the side as a trusted man of Emilio Azcárraga Jean.
Curiously, in 2018, when Yon de Luisa left his responsibilities at América, it was Barcácel who took over, this after the success he had leading the negotiations for Televisa to reinforce its shareholding in Univisión with more than $1 billion of investment.
Despite being a semi-unknown to the fans, in the Liga MX offices they know him for his tough decisions, such as when decided to fire Piojo Herrera on December 21, 2020 when he was not planning Club América to look for another coach.
