Few people seem convinced that a Jon Snow-focused Game Of Thrones spinoff is the best idea. Well… except Jon Snow himself who was the one who proposed it.
George RR Martin, creator of the A Song of Fire and Ice saga (in which Game of Thrones is inspired), has confirmed that Kit Harrington will not only be part of the show returning to his role as Jon Snow, but also that the actor was who proposed to HBO Max to make a new series that would expand the history of his character:
“It was Kit Harrington who brought us the idea. I can’t tell you the names of the writers/showrunners as they haven’t been cleared for release yet… but Kit brought them in as well, his own team, and they’re fantastic. … Schemes and treatments have been written and approved, scripts have been written, notes have been given, the second and third drafts have been written. So far, that’s it,” Martin’s blog reads.

Again, it is surprising that the study has made the determination to approve this spinoff considering the reception that the end of Game of Thrones had. Harrington’s return is also unexpected. Most of the main actors of Game of Thrones have expressed their intention not to return to the franchise. Harrington primarily was one of the most vocal in his desire not to return as Jon Snow, even taking a break from acting after the HBO Max series ended.
The other thing that is important to take away from Martin’s answer is that the Jon Snow series is anything but confirmed. All three drafts indicate that the series hasn’t even been greenlit by the studio and is most likely just testing the waters with the project and seeing if the idea can result in a successful show. If HBO Max is going by public response, the series is as dead as Jon Snow at the end of Game of Thrones season 4. But we have seen stranger things… so we do not rule out that, as in the series, the project revives in a rather anti-climatic way.
