In a battle that left a very good taste in the mouth of Oscar de la hoya, who described it as “the best of the year”, and boxing fans in general, this Saturday the former Mexican world champion Luis “Pantera” Nery defeated his rival, the Armenian Azat Hovhannisyan, by technical knockout in an elimination fight to dispute the super bantamweight belt of the World Boxing Council (WBC)
In the performance held at the Fox Theater in Pomona, California, both boxers put on a great show for the fans, as they they downplayed the defense and came with all the power of their fists.
The first three episodes were for the Armenian, who shook the Mexican’s humanity on several occasions, mainly with his left foot; but for the fourth Nery got over it and began to tip the scales in his favor.
The fifth was a memorable episode: a cut began to diminish Azat and the “Pantera” sought to make the wound bigger; however, the Armenian became a beast that responded to each blow without giving or asking for quarter.
In the eighth round, the Asian took the lead again and in the ninth he hurt the Mexican with his 1-2, although at the end of it, in a fast-paced closing, things changed again.
By the tenth round both began to suffer the ravages of the tremendous exhibition they were offering and they were showing physical exhaustion. That was when Nery began to finish the fight, since he got extra energy, which helped him to send Hovhannisyan to the canvas, who got up before the count of 10. Nery kept hitting, doing damage and looking for the knockout, but the bell rang and prevented it.
On the 11th came what already seemed inevitable, which was the triumph of Luis Nery, who continued to punish his opponent as best he could and referee Ray Corona stopped the fight at 1:51, declaring the technical knockout for the Aztec.
With this win, “Pantera” became mandatory challenger for Stephen FultonWBC Super Bantamweight Monarch.
