Many people use the Internet to search for weather information and answer questions like “will it rain today?”, “Is the sun shining on our vacation destination?” Or “Do I need to wear a jacket?” What most people do is open the website of their favorite newspaper, or the website of a popular weather portal, to get today’s weather information and a forecast for the next few days.
The free sWeather wearable app has been released as part of Donation Coder’s fundraising event in March. The application has been designed to display local weather information in the Windows system tray and in the program window. Therefore, it is a useful alternative for users who regularly search for weather reports on the Internet.
The setup is a bit tricky as it uses WOEID information used by Yahoo Weather. Yahoo Weather uses a WOEID, or Where On Earth ID, to determine locations around the world.
Therefore, users need to enter the WOEID of a location to get local weather reports for that location. To do that, they must visit the Yahoo Weather website and enter their location or zip in the form near the top of the page.
The last part of the URL of the page that displays weather information on Yahoo is WOEID.
The WOEID for New York is 2459115.
This ID must be entered for each location for which the user wishes to access weather reports.
Locations are added in the settings accessed through the Options menu at the top of the program window.
Users can add as many locations as they want as long as they have the WOEID handy. The local weather app uses non-metric units by default which can also be changed in the options.
The app displays the local weather report for one location at a time, with the option to switch between all configured locations using the mouse (click or mouse wheel) or keyboard shortcuts (left, right, or up, down).
The weather information is detailed and includes different information along with the current temperature of the location. Among the information are the weather forecast for the next day, the “felt temperature”, humidity and wind strength.
The application window can be closed without losing access to weather information. The system tray icon displays the current temperature and current condition as an icon.
It is not possible to change location if the application is minimized. For that, it would be necessary to open it again with a double click on the system tray icon.
Interested users can download the sWeather app directly from Skwire’s Empire on the DCMembers website. The program is portable and should work on most editions of the Windows operating system. It was tested on a 64-bit edition of Windows 7.
