Since January 28, 2022, Starlink already has the official authorization from Anatel to operate as a telecommunications company in Brazil.
In practice, this means that it is already possible to hire SpaceX’s satellite internet service here. Check out more details on how the process works below.
What is Starlink and how does it work?
Well, the initiative was created with the support of billionaire Elon Musk in 2015, its purpose is to provide quality internet access in remote locations, such as rural areas, for example, which often do not even have good mobile internet coverage. .
Since then, according to the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, Starlink already has more than 1400 autonomous satellites operating. To expand the service’s coverage, the idea is to send another 42,000 satellites into space in the future.
In October last year, the network officially started operating in the US. In Brazil, according to Anatel, the company is authorized to offer satellite internet service until March 28, 2027.
What are the speeds?
Subscribers can reach on average between 100 and 200 Mbps of download speed, the level of latency, in turn, changes according to the location. The data are from the official page of the service. In upload, the speed is much lower, something around 10 Mbps.
As the signal is distributed wirelessly and captured by an antenna, the company also informs that obstacles that are in the way, such as buildings, can cause speed drops, as well as a traditional wireless network.
Those who live in rural areas will have the advantage of capturing a better quality signal, since the chance of having obstacles is lower.
How much does the installation kit and monthly fee cost?
To test Starlink, first of all you need to purchase an installation kit, which contains the main antenna and a router. Abroad, this kit costs $499.
In Brazil, both items cost R$3,000.00, not counting the cost of shipping, which costs another R$365.00. From the start, the subscriber will have to pay BRL 3,365.00 to have the service operating (excluding taxes).
Abroad, Starlink’s monthly fee costs US$ 99, around R$ 480 considering the current price. In Brazil, the value will be slightly above that, R$ 530 per month.
How to hire Starlink in Brazil?
For now, it is already possible to book the service through the Starlink website. To do this, simply add your address, click ‘Order Now’ and follow the on-screen instructions.
