Luis Campos, sports director of Paris Saint Germain, assured that they are in talks to extend the contract to Lionel Messi, who will be with the club until June 2023.
“We are negotiating. I do not want to hide that I would like to have him in this project, that he can continue with us ”, Campos said on TF1 television.
The renewal has taken time after the Argentine star became world champion in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, one of Messi’s goals. Now it depends on the environment of the Argentine player and the PSG management to reach an agreement.
“I would be happy if it continued, but we are in negotiations at the moment to try to make it happen, to continue having Leo Messi with us”said.
Messi is celebrating his second season at PSG, where he arrived in the summer of 2021 from Barcelona, where he has spent most of his career.
After a difficult first year, the player is completing a great second season and was key this Saturday in PSG’s victory against Toulouse.
This season, Messi has had a rebound in Ligue 1. In his first year he added 6 goals and 15 assists in 26 games, but in this season he has 10 goals and 10 assists in 18 games, which has made it his best year in France.
For the Champions League, Lionel Messi has 4 goals and 4 assists in 5 games and now he must face Bayern Munich in the round of 16 of the Champions League.
Campos assured that at halftime he spoke with the Argentine, whom he asked to drag the team to victory and the player replied: “quiet”, before completing a great second half in which he scored a goal.
Messi’s contribution to the team is now more key than ever, after the absence due to injury of Frenchman Kylian Mbappé, who will miss the key first leg of the Champions League round of 16 match against Bayern Munich on the 14th.
