Paris Hilton on why she kept her son a secret

There’s a lot going on in Paris Hilton’s life. She recently had her first child with husband Carter Reum, and when the child was born via surrogate motherhood, they managed to keep the pregnancy a secret until the son was a few days old. In an interview with Harper’s Bazaar, Paris Hilton talks about the decision and the secrecy.

A few years ago, heiress and reality star Paris Hilton found love in husband Carter Reum. In the same vein, she participated in the documentary “This is Paris” where she opened up about a dark chapter in her life, about how as a teenager she was forced to live in various boarding schools where the children were treated badly and exposed to abuse. The documentary changed the common perception of Paris Hilton and she told herself that for many years she has played a role, staged herself and even impersonated her own voice.

Kept the son a secret from the outside world

On the day her son, Phoenix Barron Hilton Reum, was born via surrogacy, Paris Hilton checked herself into the hospital under a different name, wearing a brown wig and hoodie. The baby’s existence was up to that point completely unknown to the outside world. “My whole life has been so public,” Paris Hilton told Harper’s Bazaar magazine. “I’ve never had anything for myself. We decided we wanted that part for ourselves.” Once the little family got home, they had the house in Beverly Hills all to themselves, they told their employees that the house needed to be repainted. In this way, they got to experience the first days with their newborn son in peace and quiet.

Was exposed to abuse in youth

In the interview, Paris also talks about the tough time at various boarding schools, where her parents sent her during her teens because of her “rebellious” personality. She has previously told how she was sexually assaulted by an employee at one of the schools, Provo Canyon in Utah.

In an interview with the New York Times, she talked about what she and other children were exposed to at school. “There were a few different people from the staff who got to lay us down on the table and put their fingers in us. And I don’t even know what they did, but it definitely wasn’t a doctor. It was really scary, and it’s something that I’ve repressed for many years. But now it keeps coming back, and I think about it. Now that I look back on it as an adult, I understand that it was definitely sexual abuse.”

Saw money as a path to independence

In the interview with Harper’s Bazaar, she also talks about how the young people were sometimes locked up in cold isolation cells, as punishment. She tells how she passed the time by thinking about what she would do with the rest of her life. “I will work so hard and be so successful that my parents, the people here, a man, no one will ever rule over me again.” She says that she equated money with freedom, independence and happiness.

Found love

Paris Hilton found love in Carter Reum during a Thanksgiving celebration in 2019. They officially became a couple in August 2020 and got engaged in 2021, the same year the wedding took place. The news about the addition to the family surprised many as they managed to keep all the details about the upcoming son secret. In Harper’s Bazaar, however, Paris tells us that the couple dreams of several children in the future and that she would like to have a girl one day.
