When it is traditionally time to sum up the search year on Google, many of the people, events and topics that defined the year are reflected, as well as a series of highly topical questions we were looking for answers to. The search trends are topped this year by searches about the war in Ukraine, the parliamentary elections and various sporting events, followed by big profiles that have gone out of time and people who have reappeared in popular TV series during the year.
Russia’s invasion of Ukraine was reflected in Swedes’ searches on Google and became the year’s most searched topic. Even the question categories are permeated by questions such as “why war in ukraine?“, “how many soldiers does Russia have?” and “What is an oligarch?“. Vladimir Putin is also one of the most searched people of the year.
2022 meant that it was once again election time in Sweden, prompting many to search for information that could help them navigate the political thicket. Both election results as the electoral compass trended in the search top during the year, and Swedes searched for questions such as “what should i vote for?” and “how to vote?”. Sweden’s new Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson became one of the people most searched for, and the Swedes also wanted to find an answer to the question “what do the moderates want?“. In connection with the war in Ukraine breaking out and a NATO application becoming relevant for the Swedish part this spring, questions also abounded “what is NATO?” and “why is Sweden not in NATO?”.
During the past year, there was a lot of searching for several people who made a big impression on the world. Among the most wanted is the hockey legend Börje Salming and the British monarch Queen Elizabeth, who both passed away in the fall. People who were portrayed in popular TV series during the year also appeared at the top of the search, including Clark Olofsson and Jeffrey Dahmer.
