When What If adapted Marvel Zombies the main complaint for many was that the PG 13 version of the show lacked the blood and guts that characterized the limited series. Well, it seems that now Marvel wants to redeem itself because at its panel during Comic Con in San Diego (which takes place this weekend) the studio confirmed that in addition to working on the show, this will be the first R-rated production for Disney +.
Will this version be the same as the What if from the MCU?
Yes. During the panel, the team behind Marvel Zombies assured that their inspiration was to see what happened after the cliffhanger of the What If episode. For those with less memory, the chapter ends with Peter Parker, Black Panther, and Scott Lang’s head on their way to Wakanda. What they don’t know is that there is a Thanos waiting for them with the infinity gems… as well as a zombie.
What will the show be about?
The story won’t be a close adaptation of the Marvel Zombies from the comics, but instead wants to take the concept and adapt it to the MCU. For example, the show will show some of the Phase 4 heroes fighting against the first heroes of the Marvel Universe who have been transformed. It was confirmed during the panel that some of the defenders of humanity include Yelena, Kate Bishop, Red Guardian, Jimmy Woo, Death Dealer, Shang-Chi, and Kamala Khan. The art even showed what appears to be Ikaris, who due to being an ‘artificial being’ has not been fully transformed into a zombie, but instead is half human and half undead.

On the other side are heroes like Captain America (or the half of him left after the events of What If), Captain Marvel, Phantom, Abomination, Hawkeye, and Scarlet Witch (somewhat strange, considering the last time we saw her Ultron had eliminated her, along with the other mountain of zombies Dr. Strange summoned.)
Much more gore in Marvel Zombies
Perhaps the best news is that this version will have much more blood and gore scenes than what we saw in What If… or at least that is the promise of the Marvel team that ensured that this animated series will be the first to win the classification of type R on Disney+. It is something that we have to see, because the MCU by nature has always been PG13. The Marvel Zombies Comic, on the other hand, includes a moment where the Hulk transforms back into Bruce Banner and Magneto’s undigested ribs rupture his stomach.
