The Mexican team that will be in the World Baseball Classic lost 6-0 to the Cleveland Guardians in a practice game before the tournament debut on March 11 against Colombia.
Right-handed pitcher José Urquidy was the starter for the Mexican team that was punished from the start of the match and the Mexican offense couldn’t build runs with men on the bases.
Urquidy was given the responsibility of pitching in this practice game in which he pitched for three innings, he received 5 hits, three runs, two home runs and only one strikeout.
Urquidy’s problems began in the first inning after a hit by Ahmed Rosario and a long home run by Dominican José Ramírezone of the great absences that will not be with the Dominican Republic in the World Classic.
Shortstop Gabriel Arias hit a long home run in the second inning to increase Cleveland’s lead to 3-0 against Mexico. In the fifth inning, Javier Assad relieved Urquidy and allowed two more runs on a double by Myles Straw that drove in Steven Kwan and a single by José Ramírez to bring in Straw.
Manager Benjamín Gil used several pitchers as part of his bullpen in the exhibition game. These were Jo Jo Romero, Giovanny Gallegos, Adrián Martínez –who also conceded a race–, Jaime Arias and Jesús Cruz.
On offense, Mexico only produced five hits with three hits by Alan Trejo and Randy, of the Tampa Bay Rays., received two tickets, but was unable to score on the run. This Thursday, March 9, Mexico will face the Colorado Rockies as the last preparation game before facing Colombia on Saturday, March 11.
For its part, Colombia defeated the Oakland Athletics 3-2 in their practice game before the World Classic.
