Former manager of the Mexican National Teams, Guillermo Cantú recalled that Jürgen Klopp and Mauricio Pochettino refused to lead the Mexican National Team before signing Tata Martino.
In an interview for ESPN, Cantú recalled that they searched among great options for the cycle of Mexico at the Qatar 2022 World Cup, among which he came to speak with the German and the Argentine.
“There were several very interesting names, although it is irrelevant to mention them all“, said Cantú in the aforementioned interview.
“For example: I always liked Klopp and he had just left Borussia Dortmund. For that reason we contacted him and the answer was that in his professional plan he was not going to take any selection at the moment. Thank you very much for contacting him and taking an interest.“, the story continued.
In the same way, he revealed the anecdote with Pochettino, who at that time was in charge of Tottenham’s destinations and his response was also negative for El Tri.
He recounted that he met with the Argentine and told him that at Tottenham he had everything and he did not want to leave that job, in addition Cantú assures that Pochettino had an exceptional team at his side and that he does not know if he would finally enter the position of the Mexican National Team.
The new appointment of a coach for Mexico is still awaited and many names are on the list of rumors, including Guillermo Almada, Ignacio Ambriz, Marcelo Bielsa, Jaime Lozano, Ricardo Ferretti, among others.
