How to use Gmail confidential mode

Gmail’s confidential mode can be very useful if you want to send more sensitive information and want to protect it from third parties.

O Gmail confidential mode works both for emails composed only of textual content, and for sending multimedia attachments (such as photos, videos or even documents). This mode helps keep your information private, so that only the recipient can see and open it.

Gmail’s confidential mode also lets you set a expiration date for the email sent, thus establishing a period of time in which the recipient is obliged to open the e-mail. You can also retrieve the emails you want, whenever you want.

Gmail goes further by implementing this mode, so prevents the recipient from resending, copying, printing or making download of confidential email which received. Google warns, however, that it can be done screenshots of these messages and that there are cases where owners of pirated programs are able to access confidential e-mails.

Send confidential emails through Gmail

There are many ways to do this, depending on where you are opening Gmail: whether on your computer or on a mobile device. It also matters whether that device is Android or iOS – as there are slight differences from one operating system to the other.

on the computer

First, it is essential that you use the new version of Gmail. If you are not using it yet, or if you are not even aware of its existence, activate it first.

Just do Login in your account, click the Settings icon (at the top right, under your photo) and select “Try the new Gmail”). After exploring the new layoutfollow these steps to enable confidential mode:

  1. In the menu on the left, click on “Compose”;
  2. In the lower right corner, in the window that appeared for composing a new email, you can see that there is a new icon (Turn on confidential mode). Click on it to activate Gmail confidential mode;
  3. Be aware of the information that has appeared in a new window. You will be asked to define an expiration date (after which the email sent expires) and if you want to enter a password (which will be sent to you by SMS) without which the email cannot be opened;
  4. Click on “Save”.

Assume that the expiration date you set has not yet expired and that want to retrieve the email sent. You can do this by following these steps:

  1. In the menu on the left, select “Sent”;
  2. Then click on “Open confidential email”;
  3. Select the “Remove Access” option.

on android

The procedure is very similar. The base is the same, all that changes is the platform and the icons present in each one. If you watch the video above you will understand, in a visual and simplified way, how you can follow the steps explained “On your computer” and replicate them on your Android. But keep in mind that Gmail app is required, so don’t try to follow these steps from the browser.

on iOS

The procedure remains for iOS devices. Once again, the icons of each operating system are changed, but the logic remains unchanged. We remind you, again, that to activate Gmail’s confidential mode, you have to do it through the application itself.
