To file the IRS or deal with other tax matters, it is necessary to have a password to access the Finance Portal. Find out how to order, change or retrieve yours.
If you have never registered on the Finance Portal, it is essential that you start by ask for your password. This is the most direct way, in some cases the only way, to handle your tax matters.
Through the Finance Portal, it is possible to deliver the IRS declaration, issue green receipts or consult your tax debts. Having an access password is, therefore, essential, since many of these things are only possible to do through the Internet.
How to ask for the access password for the first time?
If you are a new user — or want to request a password, for example for your children — these are the steps to follow.
1. Enter the Finance Portal and, at the top of the page, click on the “Register” button.
two. Complete the registration form, indicating your personal data (taxpayer number, e-mail, telephone and tax address).
3. At this point, you are given the option to set a security question. You should do so and memorize or write down your answer. You will need it in case you forget or lose your password.
4. After filling in this information, click on “Register”.
When you finish registration, you will automatically receive two codes, one via SMS (to confirm the mobile phone number) and another via email (to confirm the email address). Save them. These codes can only be confirmed after you have received the password by mail at your tax address.
Once the password arrives, confirm the two codes you received. Simply access “Email and Telephone Confirmation” on the Finance Portal.
How long will it take for the password to arrive?
The password to access the Finance Portal is sent via CTT (and never by email) in a average term of five working dayswhich means that one must order in advance.
If you do not receive the password within that period, you should go to the Tax Office or call the Telephone Assistance Center (+351 217 206 707) to find out the status of your application.
The shipment will be made to your tax domicile, so it is important to make sure that the address shown in the records of the Tax and Customs Authority is up to date.
How to change your password?
After receiving your original password, you can change it on the Finance Portal. It is a common procedure to make this change when we receive the first password, which is usually complicated and difficult to memorize.
Also, you might want to change it for security reasons. If you have changed your accountant or suspect that someone has discovered your access to the Finance Portal, then it is advisable to do so.
To do so, you only have to select the option “Change Password”. Then enter the new password and confirm it. The new access password must contain between 8 and 16 characters.
As soon as you click on the “Change” button, the previous password is immediately canceled
and you will be able to use the new password chosen by you.
How to recover password?
If you have lost or do not remember your password, you can ask for it to be reissued on the Finance Portal using the option “Recover Password”.
It is essential, however, that you know how to answer the security question you chose when registering on the portal, as you will be asked when you try to recover your password.
After entering the NIF and answering the security question, you will have to choose the password recovery method: by letter or by SMS.
When you choose the Letter option, the previous password is canceled immediately and you are
sent a letter with the new password to your current tax domicile, within
average of 5 working days.
This modality is valid whether you have trusted your mobile phone number or not.
An immediate way to recover the Finance password is by mobile phone, but for that you need to have it guaranteed at the time of registration on the Portal.
After selecting the option “Code by SMS”, you will have to enter the trusted phone number. The last 3 digits of that number are indicated in the field that you will have to fill in.
When you press the “Recover Password” button, a six-digit code is sent via SMS to your mobile phone. Note that you only have 5 minutes to type it in the respective field.
From then on you can set the new password.
When you forgot the security answer
If you don’t remember the answersend an email to [email protected] via the e-mail address you indicated on the membership form. You must write in the subject “Password Cancellation” and in the body of the email indicate your full name, NIF and tax address.
After confirming the cancellation by e-mail, you can follow our instructions again to register again. The new password will be sent by letter to your tax domicile within five working days.

If you are very urgent to comply with a tax obligation and none of the above solutions are an option for you, there is still the possibility of requesting a password on the spot.
In this case, the request is not made on the Portal, but in person at a tax office. The temporary password is given to you in a sealed letter which, under no circumstances, can be opened by Finance officials.
Please note that this password only valid for five daysso change it before it expires if you don’t want to be without access to the Finance Portal again.
Why should you have a Finance password?
The Finance Portal has existed for many years, but only more recently has it become unavoidable in the lives of most Portuguese people.
Before, the filling and delivery of forms related to the most diverse matters of tax life had to be done “by hand”. This almost always involved a visit to the tax office in the area of residence to follow up on simple processes that can now be handled comfortably using a computer.
Currently, there are things that can only be done this way. With the end of the green receipt books, for example, issuing receipts, invoices or receipt-invoices is now only possible through the Portal. The same happens with the delivery of the IRS declaration which, since 2018, can only be done online.
However, to be able to do all these things anywhere you have the Internet, you need access to the Finance Portal. Even if you use an accountant or someone to take care of your tax affairs, that person will always need your Finance password to be able to access your account.
Remember that through this password you can still access the site e-invoiceto register, consult and validate invoices.
