The legendary designer Vivienne Westwood has died, her fashion house confirms in a post on Twitter. “The world needs people like Vivienne,” the post reads.
On Thursday, December 29, British designer Vivienne Westwood passed away surrounded by her family in Clapham, south London, her fashion house wrote in a statement on Twitter.
“The world needs people like Vivienne to change the world for the better,” the post says.
One of the 20th century’s most iconic designers
Vivienne Westwood has been called one of the most influential fashion designers of the 20th century and is known for bringing punk into the fashion world. During her five-decade career, she created creations worn by everyone from the punk band the Sex Pistols to Margaret Thatcher.
Westwood was also a passionate activist who often used her fashion shows to highlight climate issues as well as political issues. She also supported organizations such as Cool Earth and Greenpeace, and on her website you can find her manifesto where she highlights, among other things, the negative effects that overconsumption has on the climate.
Vivienne Westwood was 81 years old.
