For several months now, both Sergio Busquets and Lionel Messi have sounded strong to land at Inter Miami in Major League Soccer (MLS). The club’s coach, Phill Neville, confirmed the interest in both figures and stressed that they are looking to do something big if the operations are completed.
In an interview for the English media ‘The Times’DT put an end to the speculation and acknowledged that they have the Argentine midfielder and striker as their market objective. “It would be something big to sign Messi. Something that even goes beyond our club. It would be the biggest signing ever made in the sport in the United States!”
“I am not going to deny that Messi interests us. In Miami we want to attract the best, and both Messi and Busquets have been at the top for years. They are very good players who would take us and the entire MLS to a new level,” he added.
Both Busquets and Messi end their contract next July and so far the negotiations for a renewal are not advanced. In the case of the Catalan veteran, it is not known if he will accept a contract extension with FC Barcelona, put an end to his successful career or join the MLS.
Regarding Messi, the dialogues to extend his link with Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) began before the Qatar 2022 World Cup and were advanced. However, there are high chances that the South American star will not continue with the Parisians.
For his part, Neville is calm and confident that this scenario could occur and recalled that since his arrival in Miami in 2021, he has always looked his best. “Whether it’s Sergio Ramos, Dani Alves, Robert Lewandowski, Cesc Fábregas, Luis Suárez, etc. And don’t forget that in our ranks we have had footballers of the stature of Gonzalo Higuaín and Blaise Matuidi”.
Inter Miami, owned by David Beckham, will begin a new MLS season this Saturday, February 25, facing CF Montreal at home.
