Do you have a 5G Wi-Fi network but don’t know how it works? • ENTER.CO

Recently I was looking for options that would allow me to have faster internet at home. When checking the Wi-Fi networks that were available, I found the one at home and one with the same name but that says “5G”. It made me curious because I know that in Colombia we still do not have 5G networks, we are barely in pilots; So what does 5G Wi-Fi refer to?

We got in touch with the Claro Colombia team and had an interview with the engineer Harold Adolfo Morales who explained to us what it is about. The first thing to keep in mind is that when we talk about “5G networks” we are referring to the mobile connection, that is, the one that allows you to make and receive calls. Also, the ‘G’ in this network stands for “generation”, in other words: the fifth generation of mobile networks. On the other hand, in the Wi-Fi network, the ‘G’ refers to Gigahertz (GHz), a unit of measurement of frequencies.

Said like this, Harold Morales explains that, in Colombia, as in the rest of the world, they had been working with a 2.4GHz WiFi frequency, the only one in charge of supplying internet to all Colombians. Seeing that it was quite “busy”, a new frequency was generated, 5GHz, used in many homes in the country.

Are 5G WiFi networks faster?

The older network, the 2.4GHz has much more range, but less power; For its part, the 5GHz network is the opposite, it has less range, but it is much more powerful. For example, if the internet router is on the first floor of your house and you are on the third floor, you’d better connect to 2.4. However, if you are closer to the modem, you can use 5G, which will allow you to download and browse faster. This is because the 2.4 GHz network has enough capacity to go through walls.

How long will each network take to download files?

Morales explains that it will depend exclusively on the megabytes that you have contracted with your internet service, however, he gave us some examples of the power of each network. For example, if you have 100 megabytes, with the 2.4GHz network you can take between 22 and 25 minutes to download an HD movie. While with the 5GHz network you can download the same movie in 15 to 20 minutes.

Do I need a special device to connect to the 5GHz network?

No. Although phones and other devices now come equipped with 5G connectivity, this refers to the mobile network connection as we explained at the beginning. While for the Wi-Fi network we need devices that can support the 5GHz Wi-Fi network, and as the engineer explains, for at least 4 or 5 years all devices have been equipped to be able to connect to that network, so surely all your televisions , cell phones and computers can connect to the 5GHz network without problem.
