During the high-profile defamation trial between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard earlier this year, Depp said he wouldn’t do another Pirates of the Caribbean-film even if he was offered “300 million dollars and a million alpacas” – but now the actor seems to have changed his mind, according to The Sun who reports that he will return in the role of Jack Sparrow next year.

Pirates-film with Margot Robbie put on hold

Johnny Depp took on the role of Jack Sparrow for the first time in the early 2000s and has appeared in all five films in the series. But after allegations of abuse by his ex-wife Amber Heard in connection with their 2016 divorce, Disney seemed to want to take the films in a new direction, this one with a film starring Margot Robbie.

However, those plans seem to have been put on hold, something Robbie commented on in an interview with Variety last week:

“We had an idea that we developed for a while, a long time ago, which was to make a movie with more female leads – not just female leads – but a different kind of story, which we thought would have been really cool. But I guess [Disney] don’t want to do it.”

Instead of betting on one Pirates of the Caribbean-film with Robbie in the lead role, Disney now seems to have instead made an agreement with Depp, something that the film company has probably been waiting for for a long time. Already this summer it was rumored that they were preparing an offer based on Depp’s words during the defamation trial:

“Disney is preparing a $301 proposal that will include a large donation to a charity of Depp’s choosing,” the source said. “According to information, the purpose is to have Johnny Depp return as Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean 6 and a subsequent series on Disney Plus about the captain’s early life,” a source added Pop tonic in June.

“Is in an early stage”

According to The Sun a new one is coming Pirates-film with Depp will start shooting at a secret location in the UK in early 2023, specifically in February. The film project currently has the title A Day At The Sea and according to the newspaper’s source, the choice of director has not yet been nailed down.

“Everything is still in the early stages,” says the source. “Johnny is expected to do a test shoot in early February before the product goes into full production.”

The source adds:

“Bruce Hendricks, who worked on the first three films, has been named executive producer on the new project. All other details are still secret.”
