Compensation amount to be paid by Amber Heard to Johnny Depp drops

The amount of compensation to be paid by actress Amber Heard to her ex-husband Johnny Depp, initially set at $15 million, has been reduced.

The judge in charge of the case, Penney Azcarate, reduced the amount to be paid by Amber Heard at the end of the verdict, from US$ 15 million to about US$ 8 million. The actress was convicted by the jury of the Fairfax County Courthouse in the defamation lawsuit filed by Depp.

The reason for the reduction was that the jurors split the damages to be paid by Heard into two parts: $10 million as compensatory measures for the defamation against Johnny Depp, which she was convicted of, and $5 million as punitive measures.

However, the $5 million figure was reduced to $350,000 by Judge Azcarate after the verdict was read, to follow the Virginia state ceiling for punitive damages.

In turn, Johnny Depp was also sentenced to $2 million for defamation against Amber Heard. Thus, deducting this amount, the actress will have to pay US$ 8.35 million to her ex-husband.

The trial resulted in the jury declaring Johnny Depp victory in the three allegations of defamation that the actor made against his ex-wife, Amber Heard. According to the actor’s defense, Heard defamed him in three points in a 2016 article published by the Washington Post.

The jury, in turn, agreed that the three excerpts were indeed defamatory. The article’s points are as follows: when Heard says he spoke “against sexual violence – and faced the wrath of our culture”, the point at which he states that “two years later, I became a public figure representing domestic abuse, and felt the strength of our culture’s anger at women who report,” and the third, in which she stated that “I got the rare real-time view of how institutions protect men accused of rape.”

Amber Heard won just one of the three allegations she made against Depp. The sentence that led to the conviction against Depp is from one of his lawyers, who said: “It was simply an ambush, a hoax. They armed Mr. Depp calling the police, but the first attempt didn’t work. The officers arrived on the penthouses, searched and interrogated thoroughly, and left after seeing no damage to the face or property. So Amber and her friends spilled some wine and messed up the place, put their stories directly under the direction of a lawyer and publicist, and then made a second call to 911.”

However, the jury did not find the following statements by Depp’s attorney to be defamatory, as Amber Heard charged: “Amber Heard and her friends in the media use false allegations of sexual violence as a sword and shield, depending on their needs. They selected some of their sexual violence fraud ‘facts’ as the sword, inflicting them on the public and Mr. Depp” and “We have reached the beginning of the end of Ms. Heard vs. Johnny Depp.”
