Saúl ‘Canelo’ Álvarez will return to the ring in 2023 and will do it at home, as he will play his first fight after the victory against Gennady Golovkin, in Mexico. Several places have sounded like possible venues to host the event, including the Akron Stadium, home of Chivas de Guadalajara.

According to information from the ESPN network, the great capacity of this sports venue would be one of the strong points to take the ‘Canelo’ fight against John Ryder, current Interim Super Middleweight Champion of the World Boxing Organization (WBO).

The fight will take place on May 6 in his native Jalisco, for the first time since June 2011. “The indisputable returns to the land where he was born,” a source close to ESPN Knocaut reportedly declared.

The capacity of the Akron Stadium is for more than 45,000 people. However, the chain specified that at the moment an official venue for the event has not been specified. There are even other candidate locations that have sounded on par. The Nuevo Progreso Bullring and the Vicente Fernández Arena, where ‘Canelo’ fought at home in June 2011, defeating the British Ryan Rhodes.

12 years later, the prodigal son would return with a record of 58-2-2 and 39 knockouts. Today, the Aztec boxer is considered one of the best pound for pound in the world. Against Ryder, Álvarez would draw his World Boxing Association, World Boxing Council, International Boxing Federation and World Boxing Organization titles.

It would be ‘Canelo’s’ first fight in Mexico since he defeated Puerto Rican Kermit Cintrón in November 2011 at the Monumental Plaza de Toros México and the first since his victory against GGG and subsequent surgery on one of his hands, which is why he has farthest from the quadrilaterals.
