Blue light from cell phones can cause precocious puberty • ENTER.CO

The blue light from cell phones has effects on human health, this has been confirmed by many studies in this regard.

Now a recent research presented in the framework of the 60th Annual Meeting of the European Society for Pediatric Endocrinology, reveals that this type of light can cause an effect called precocious puberty. This warns that prolonged exposure to the effects of this light, present in cell phones and tablets, alters hormone levels.

These effects would be more visible towards the end of childhood. This work was led by researchers from the University of Ankara and was carried out with laboratory mice under controlled conditions. In total, the mice were divided into three groups, one subjected to normal light conditions. The other two subjected to 6 hours of blue light and 12 hours of the same light.

The results were conclusive. In the two groups subjected to blue light exposure, there was evidence of an evident increase in puberty. Even the longer the exposure to this type of light, the earlier the appearance of the hormonal cascade that leads to sexual maturity.

The mice that received exposure to blue light showed a decrease in hormones such as melatonin, while there was an increase in sex hormones such as estradiol. This hormone in humans is the one with the highest concentration in non-pregnant women. In addition to hormonal changes, physical changes were recorded such as an increase in ovarian tissues, much like how puberty begins in humans. It is important to know that in the mice where there was a 12-hour exposure to blue light, this change tended to be harmful.

The doctor, Aylin Kilinc, who leads the study, assured that it is not possible to say that these changes occur in infants. However, she assured that the excess of contact with blue light does generate a significant hormonal decrease. It is the first time that a study has reached these findings. Until now, the main results have focused on the alteration of sleep cycles in humans.
