Puerto Rican boxer Amanda Serrano assured this Monday in Puerto Rico that women “are strong and have power” to achieve great triumphs in life, just as she did this month as an athlete. In addition, at the same press conference, she explained how it is that her greatest ‘trophy’ is giving other women the opportunity to shine in the sport.
Serrano, 33 years old, On February 4, she became the first Puerto Rican boxer -male or female- to unify all the world boxing titles by defeating the Mexican Erika Cruz by unanimous decision at Madison Square Garden.
“That’s my job: Open doors for other women. And I believe that this is my trophy, helping others and I am happy. (You have to) move onand. I opened the door for you”he said during a tribute ceremony at the headquarters of the Department of Recreation and Sports (DRD).
Until there, Serrano arrived carrying his five featherweight titles from the World Boxing Organization, World Boxing Association, International Boxing Federation, the World Boxing Council and the International Boxing Organization.
“Thank you from the bottom of my heart. I would not have become a champion without you, because Puerto Rico had never achieved that and we need to shine. We needed to say: ‘we have all kinds of champions,’ Serrano told those present on the DRD’s Nilmarie Santini court.
The champion Jonathan “Bomba” González, Alberto Machado, and former champions Félix “Tito” Trinidad, Alex “El Nene” Sánchez and Alfredo “El Salsero” Escalera, also attended the tribute. as well as the boxers Kiria Tapia and Stephanie Piñeiro.
“The doors are wide open for Kiria, Stephanie, for them to do whatever they want. Things have changed. At first there was no money, there was no opportunity, and Thank God that has changed today.” said Jordan Maldonado, Serrano’s trainer.
