Having a narcissistic personality disorder can manifest itself in different ways, but in common it is about people with an extreme need for self-assertion, excessive self-esteem and a lack of self-awareness. Having a narcissist around can cause a lot of problems and here we list 14 things that a genuine narcissist would never do – things that you’ve probably noticed if you happen to have one in your life.
1. They don’t show their true selves
Narcissists are manipulative, so naturally they will show you their best selves when you first meet them. They simply trick you into thinking they are sweet, kind and easy going which you will soon find out they are not at all.
2. They are not even-tempered
Narcissists tend to keep you on your toes. The last thing they want is for you to feel safe and secure in the relationship. It gives them pleasure to be all over you in every way. When you feel insecure, they become even more confident.
3. They don’t allow anyone to blame them
In a narcissist’s eyes, they can never be the one who did wrong. No matter what the situation looks like, they are blameless and will turn everything around to make it your fault.
4. They don’t like to lose control
Narcissists are control freaks and losing control makes them extremely upset. They want to control everyone around them and can’t handle being excluded.
5. They won’t let people prove them wrong
A narcissist will claim that black is white until you actually start to believe it. Trying to argue with them is just a waste of time and effort; their manipulative nature will cause you to start doubting yourself.
6. They don’t see others as equals
Narcissists think they are something completely extra and don’t think you are on the same level. If you try to be like them, they will do everything in their power to bring you back down to earth.
7. They feel no sympathy
These are the types of people who laugh while everyone else cries during a sad movie. They don’t really care that your mother is going through a difficult divorce or that someone close to you just passed away. Unless it concerns them, of course.
8. They don’t put energy into things that don’t benefit them
Narcissists do nothing unless it can benefit them in some way.
9. They don’t take orders from others
Don’t try to boss around a narcissist. Namely, they will never take orders from someone else – without then wanting revenge.
10. They don’t listen to others
They are not further listeners but just waiting for you to finish talking at some point so they can finally get the word back.
11. They jump between relationships and don’t stay
If you bore them in a relationship, you can count on them to disappear. They want attention and if you don’t give them what they want they will find someone else who will.
12. They don’t want unattractive friends
As mentioned, narcissists don’t do anything that doesn’t benefit them. Look at their friends for example. They surround themselves with attractive and successful people to make themselves feel more superior and invincible.
13. They don’t give compliments – but want them
Narcissists want praise and are driven by it. However, they do not want to give it to others as they never aim to make people around them feel good. You are lucky if you get a compliment from a narcissist but should also be suspicious.
14. They will never admit they have a problem
A true narcissist will never admit they have a problem and definitely not seek help to get a diagnosis.
